Makaton training
With Jennie Pitchers, Makaton Tutor
What is Makaton?
If you consider how many times you need to communicate in a day, you will see how frustrating and isolating it can be if spoken communication is a challenge.
Asking for things, understanding conversations, solving problems, making choices, expressing feelings, making friends and learning can all be affected by communication difficulties.
Makaton is a supportive communication system which uses non-verbal signs and symbols, alongside speech. These visual cues aid understanding of spoken language as well as giving a means of expression when speech is difficult.
The Makaton communication programme uses symbols and non-verbal signs alongside speech to support communication, creating an inclusive community where everyone has a chance to understand and to express themselves.
Why learn Makaton?
Do you, a family member, someone you work with or someone in your community find it difficult to communicate through spoken language alone?
Makaton is a vital language support system for many adults and children with learning or communication difficulties, and it is also important for the people who interact with them, such as:
parents, family members, friends, carers, health providers and eduaction workers.
shop, library or community workers, emergency service personnel and faith workers.

Makaton is often used within SEND provision to support those with learning difficulties to communicate effectively and to provide an environment where all can flourish.
Makaton is used regularly in many mainstream schools and nurseries to support development of communication skills, and to help all children interact together in play and in learning.

Makaton can be used with very young children to reduce the frustration that can come with early language development.

Makaton can support people for whom English is an additional language to communicate immediately while their understanding of the language develops.
Within an inclusive community setting, Makaton signs and symbols can help support Makaton users:
to understand a medical, dental or optician appointment
to make choices in a cafe, shop or library
to manage if an emergency occurs
to understand what is on offer for them in their community.
