On alternate Mondays, I run a community choir for anyone who wishes to have some fun using Makaton signs alongside a variety of songs.
We use the hall at Wellington Methodist Church from 5.30-7pm and have so far learned signs for a mixture of old and new pop songs, some songs from musicals and a variety of traditional and modern Christmas songs.
We joined in the Christmas 'singalong' to raise money for Speech and language UK and also entertained at the December coffee morning.
Anyone who wishes to come along is most welcome and you do not need any prior knowledge of Makaton to join. You don't even have to sing!
The choir is free to attend thanks to a grant from Somerset County Council to cover the cost of hiring the hall.
Next Makaton choir date:
April 20th 2026 from 5.30pm
Makaton signing at Waterstones
It was a privilege to be invited to sign some stories at Waterstones, Taunton for one of their Saturday story sessions. Adding Makaton signs while reading books can make the stories much more accessible to those who struggle with understanding spoken communication.
Carer comment
"Thank you Jennie. It was great to have stories signed and spoken. We have already had an imitation of the event enacted at home.
Its lovely to see how signed communication can increase the amount of a story that is understood and remembered." Lisa
