Core Makaton Levels
Level 1
Level 1 Workshop is the starting point for your Makaton journey. It is recommended for people who need to use Makaton at home or in their work, to develop the communication skills of others.
This training can be delivered over a full day or two half-days.
Level 2
The Level 2 Workshop builds on topics learnt from Level 1 training including; people, food, activities, objects and events. New vocabulary will also be introduced which is ideal for the school environment and work places.
This training can be delivered over a full day or two half-days.
Level 3
The Level 3 Workshop builds on topics such as; people, activities, events and objects. New vocabulary will also be introduced which are ideal for personal development; feelings, interests, community and, thinking and knowing. You will begin to learn more abstract concepts such as propositions.
This training can be delivered over a full day or two half-days.
Level 4
The Level 4 Workshop will start with a refresher on the signs taught in Levels 1,2 and 3, building on topics such as; feelings and interests. New vocabulary will be introduced which are ideal to develop life skills; money, quantities, numbers and time. You will be introduced to the topic of relationships.
This training can be delivered over a full day or two half-days.

This workshop equips staff to engage patients in their treatment decisions, promoting teamwork to boost overall well-being and ensuring everyone feels informed and involved in their nursing care. Tailored for those within the nursing profession, it will empower participants to engage more effectively with individuals who need communication support when visiting healthcare settings, during treatment and receiving healthcare advice.
This is a 3.5 hour interactive workshop available online or face-to-face. No previous expereience of Makaton is required in order to attend. The workshop includes a manual and certificate of attendance.
This workshop is ideal for anyone working in nursing or patient care, including:
Nurses in hospitals or the community
Nurses in learning disability, mental health or children’s services

Makaton Know and Grow Christian workshop
Know and Grow Makaton offers a comprehensive introduction to Makaton, tailored specifically for use within the Christian church setting. Attendees will gain an understanding of Makaton's communication techniques, exploring how they can be employed in church services to ensure they are inclusive and accessible to everyone. The session will cover a range of essential vocabulary signs and symbols, applicable to daily interactions. Additionally, participants will become familiar with common Christian signs and symbols, practising their application in various church activities such as Bible readings, worship, and prayer.
This training can be delivered over a full day or two falf-days, either face-to-face or online.
Makaton Taster Session
A Taster Session will start you on your Makaton journey and provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme and a wider understanding of learning and communication difficulties. Taster sessions are topic based and can be tailored to your requirements. The Taster Session is an informal training and provides information about the Makaton Communication Programme and how it may be used in different settings to support language development and communication. The session introduces the signs and symbols for around 40 useful everyday words including, 12 tailored words to your setting or a chosen theme.
This sessions takes about 90 minutes.
Makaton Signing for Babies and Families
Makaton Signing for Babies and Families is for parents, family members or carers who would like to sign with babies and young children in their care, and have no previous experience of Makaton. These sessions are designed for you and your child to have fun, bond and learn together. Makaton Signing for Babies and Families training is a series of fun and interactive sessions designed to encourage the development of communication and language skills in babies and toddlers. Topics include: Saying hello, eating and drinking, developing skills, going out and using Makaton in play. You will also learn signing hints and tips for effective communication.
